So How Can I Get My Probiotics?
There are couple main ways people get their probiotics. The first one is through the foods that naturally have probiotics in them. The second way most people get their probiotics are through foods that are enhanced with them.
If you look around in grocery stores especially in the dairy isle, you’ll notice a lot of foods that are enhanced with probiotics. Usually milk and yogurt, but just about anything can be enhanced with probiotics these days. There are a few brands of cereals that are enhanced with probiotics, and I’ve even seen a salsa.
If you live near a Whole Foods, or other type of alternative food store, you’ll find a lot more foods that are enhanced with probiotics. Also, if you go to Europe or Japan, you’ll find a lot more products that are enhanced with probiotics. They have been embracing probiotics for years.
The third way most people get their probiotics is from a supplement, usually in the form of a pill, drink, or powder. Since probiotics are living bacteria, some supplements need to be refrigerated or kept frozen, and others might have different requirements too. Just pay attention to the label when you buy your probiotic supplement.
Even though probiotic supplements may require more attention so they don’t spoil or go bad, they’re by far the best way to go if you are looking to take in more probiotics. Most foods and even the enhanced foods can’t provide the amount of probiotics that a supplement can.
For example, a good probiotic supplement will give you at least 10 billion CFUs of probiotics (the number of good bacteria). A food enhanced with probiotics may not even list the amount of probiotics in the food. If its under 100 million, there’s a good chance the probiotics won’t even make it past your stomach.
